🎂 Dye-Free Vanilla Cupcakes for My Son’s 1st Birthday (Made from Scratch!)

There’s something deeply sacred about a first birthday. It’s not just balloons and party hats—it’s the celebration of a whole year of growth, grace, and sleepless miracles. The cake smash brings joy. The baby giggles add to the delight. The wide-eyed wonder shows a glimpse of God’s goodness. It’s all wrapped up in frosting and joy. When it came time to plan my son’s first birthday, I wanted to make it special. It needed to be simple and sweet. Ensuring it was safe for his tiny tummy was important.

I didn’t want cupcakes filled with mystery ingredients or artificial dyes. I wanted something real. Something he could actually enjoy without worrying about what was inside. That’s when I decided: I’m baking vanilla cupcakes from scratch.

Why from scratch? Because as a mama, there’s something reassuring about knowing exactly what’s going into your baby’s first birthday treat. No food coloring. No additives I can’t pronounce. Just wholesome, everyday ingredients I already trust—flour, eggs, vanilla, butter, and love. Honestly, it felt good to hand him a treat that was made with both care and intention.

And friends… he loved them. 🎉 Watching those tiny fingers reach for the cupcake was a moment filled with pure delight. He smashed it, frosting smeared across his cheeks and nose. It was the kind of moment that melts your heart forever. There was joy in every crumb.

Today, I’m sharing the exact recipe I used: soft, fluffy vanilla cupcakes topped with a creamy, dye-free vanilla buttercream. Whether you’re planning a first birthday or hosting a baby shower, this recipe is for you. It’s also perfect if you just want a sweet treat without the artificial extras. Made from scratch. Made with love. Made to celebrate life’s sweetest moments.

🧁 Homemade Vanilla Cupcakes (Dye-Free & Delicious)

Ingredients (Makes 12 cupcakes)

For the Cupcakes:
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup whole milk (or buttermilk for extra softness)
For the Frosting:
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1–2 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: Naturally colored sprinkles or freeze-dried fruit powder for a touch of color without artificial dyes.

📝 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream butter & sugar until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each. Stir in the vanilla.
  5. Add dry ingredients in two parts, alternating with the milk. Mix just until combined.
  6. Fill liners about 2/3 full and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool completely before frosting.

For the frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in vanilla, salt, and enough milk to reach your desired consistency.
